Meghalaya Regulation of Landlords and Verification of Tenants bill

SHILLONG: The various groups and organisations have expressed their reservation over the Meghalaya Regulation of Landlords and Verification of Tenants bill.

Giving his views on the bill during the launching of the public consultation exercise here on Friday, Synjuk Ki Seng Samla Shnong (SSSS) general secretary VS Buhphang said the bill did not mention about influx and illegal immigration.

“These are the twin issues which are of concern,” Buhphang said.

With the KHADC formulating a similar bill, he said that this proposed bill of the Government would not be applicable in the scheduled areas.

He also urged the government to ensure that the bill does not come into conflict with traditional and customary practices of the people.

ICARE president Toki Blah said the preamble to the draft bill was ‘confusing’ as no mention has been made on influx and illegal immigration.
