SHILLONG: In lines with the Bramhaputra river in Assam which is considered as one of the most dangerous rivers when it flows at its peak, there one more Umngi river in Balat area which has caused tremendous devastation in the village much to the agony of the people who live across the river.

Koiland K Dewsaw, Secretary of Shnong Balat on Friday said that the river has caused tremendous damage in the nearby village where hundreds of people have been displaced.

He recalled that many properties were destroyed eight years back when the river was in its peak which left many people homeless

“One hundred ten families became homeless and school buildings were also damaged,” he said while adding that all the affected people in the village have now moved to other villages.

The residents are praying that the contractors who have been allotted the work to construct embankments across the river hasten their work and complete the project before the onset of the monsoon season. The residents of the village approached the former Water Resources Minister AL Hek and even the incumbent minister Rowell Lyngdoh on the matter and they have come and inspected the river.
