SHILLONG: Despite reports about police launching a massive search operation in South West Khasi Hills, the district administration has said there was no exchange of fire between police and GNLA militants.

“There was no exchange of fire between police and GNLA cadres,” South West Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtynger, who is camping in Ranikor to oversee the search operation, said on Saturday.

He, however, informed that police had intensified operation in the area after they were informed that GNLA cadres were extorting money from the coal-laden trucks in Shallang area.

“We have already sent a team of COBRA along with the CRPF personnel to oversee the operation and also to provide protection to the coal mines owner,” Nongtynger said.

He said that they have official’s complaints from various coal miners who have received demand notes above Rs 15,000 from the GNLA.

“We are on the job to nab the GNLA cadres who are serving demand to the coal miners in the area,” Nongtynger said.
