Crucial MPCC meet today

SHILLONG: The ten-member Election Committee of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) is set to hold a crucial meeting on Monday to deliberate on the party candidates for the two Lok Sabha seats in the State.

The committee, headed by MPCC president DD Lapang, is slated to screen the documents of all the candidates who have applied for the party ticket for the Shillong and Tura Parliamentary seats.

Besides Lapang, other members of the committee include Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma, HDR Lyngdoh, Ampareen Lyngdoh and Deborah C Marak, former Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope, former legislator Shitlang Pale, former Deputy Speaker PW Muktieh and Mahila Congress leader Ebel War.

Pyngrope, who is a contender for the party ticket, would not attend the meeting, sources informed.

The sources also confirmed that the election committee would hold specific discussion on the candidature of Mylliem legislator Ronnie V Lyngdoh, who recently announced his candidature and has already applied for the ticket.

Lyngdoh’s emergence as a contender has added a twist to the race for the party ticket for the Shillong Parliamentary seats, the sources said.

Inside sources have, meanwhile, indicated that the prospect of sitting Lok Sabha member Vincent H Pala has been somewhat dented with the entry of the Mylliem legislator in the fray.

According to sources, the Election Committee would screen the documents and details of all the ticket aspirants on Monday and forward the list to the AICC screening committee for final selection of the candidates.
