State gets 4 cos of addl forces

SHILLONG: The Central Government has sanctioned four companies of additional forces for counter insurgency operations in Garo Hills.

Confirming this here on Tuesday, sources from the State Government said that the four companies would be used exclusively for counter-insurgency operations in Garo Hills.

The overall law and order situation in Garo Hills was also discussed in a review meeting which was attended by top Government and police officials besides the Home Minister.

Besides reviewing the overall law and order situation in the state including the militancy infested Garo Hills, the meeting is learnt to have taken certain important decisions which were not revealed to the media. Sources said that Government is taking every possible step within its resources to deal with insurgents in Garo Hills. The situation in Garo Hills is grimmer now with killings and abductions becoming more rampant by the day. In a latest incident, a senior district magistrate of South Garo Hills escaped unhurt when unidentified militants opened fire on his vehicle after he refused to heed their signal to stop near Baghmara on Monday morning.
