SHILLONG: The District Election Officer, East Khasi Hills made the best use of Valentine’s Day to reach out to the youths urging them to vote in the 2014 elections.
Like last year, the District Election Officer organised an awareness programme under the theme “My Valentine, My vote,” at Matilang Park on Friday to motivate youths to enrol themselves and cast their votes in the 2014 elections.
Young couples thronged the venue on the occasion which witnessed various programmes. Songs, dance and games were also organised as part of the initiative.
In the show, a flex was also put up where couples jotted urging people to enrol and cast their votes.  A puppet show was also organised on the occasion.
The best couple also won a complimentary dinner in one of the ‘castles’ in the park on the same evening.
The State Election Department is trying various means to rope in the youths to enrol themselves to the state electoral roll besides coming out to cast their votes in the elections.
The department has even launched the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme to spread awareness on the importance of voting, especially among the youths.
