SHILLONG: Padmashree Awardee Manas Chaudhuri has requested the Department of Posts to review the proposal to come up with the commemorative stamp in tribute to late Khasi legendary poet U Soso Tham.
“I was informed that a proposal was submitted last year for a commemorative stamp in memory of ‘U Soso Tham’. But the proposal was rejected last year itself,” Chaudhuri who is also former Education Minister said while speaking at the closing ceremony of Meghalaya Philalatelic Exhibition 2014 (MEGHAPEX 2014) held at Anton Hall here on Friday.
Chaudhuri urged upon the Post Master General, North East Circle PK Swain to review this proposal.
“The publishing of this stamp would be a befitting tribute to the late Khasi legendary poet,” the former Minister said.
It may be mentioned that the Riti Academy had submitted the proposal for publishing of the commemorative stamp of U Soso Tham.
So far, there are only three stamps which are in tribute to the stalwarts from the State and they include Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing, Jaintia freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah and father of the Sixth Schedule JJM Nichols Roy.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court PC Pant while speaking on the occasion said that he was told that the Department of Posts has come out with various commemorative stamps on North East, the last being the commemorative stamps on 50 years of statehood of Nagaland.
“As regards to the State of Meghalaya, they had issued commemorative stamps on U Tirot Sing, U Kiang Nangbah and JJM Nicholas Roy who made the State proud by their various contributions,” he said.
The Chief Justice however observed that there are enough scope projects through medium of philately, which can project various distinct socio-cultural aspects, unique flora and fauna as well as natural resources of the State on Pan-India basis.
“This would serve as an excellent medium for promotion of national integration,” Pant said.
