SHILLONG: The state election department will seek the details of a new road project for Meghalaya which was cleared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway two days after the announcement of  Lok Sabha election dates.
While the dates for poll were announced on March 5,  the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway  on March 7 cleared Rs  2573 crore road projects for Assam,  Meghalaya  and Tripura after the model code of conduct came into  effect. The new road project  sanctioned for Meghalaya is the two laning of the 68 km Nongstoin-Domiasiat-Mawthabah at the cost of Rs 470 crore. Domiasiat and Mawthabah have uranium deposits and the UCIL had funded a similar road project at Mawthabah in the past.
“We will have to get details regarding the clearance of the project. Sanctions for the project cannot be made after the imposition of the model code of conduct”, the Chief Electoral Officer P.Naik said.
