10 women drown as boat capsizes in Bisalpur dam

Jaipur: As many as 10 women on Friday drowned when the boat they were in capsized in Bisalpur Dam in Tonk district, police said. Around 16 women, mostly labourers, were going in the boat from Kasir to Nagadia village for agriculture purpose when the tragedy struck at 10 AM, they said. Bodies of ten women, of different age groups, were fished out while six others, some of whom swam back to safety, were stated to be out of danger and sent back home, Tonk SP Satyendra Singh Choudhary told PTI. The bodies were handed over to their relatives after post mortem, the SP said. Sailor Kanwar Ali, who survived the tragedy, was detained for interrogation, the SP said. The cause behind the mishap is yet to be ascertained, police said adding the names of the victims are yet to be confirmed. (PTI)

Physicist Rajesh Gopakumar chosen for 2013 G D Goenka award

New Delhi: The prestigious G D Birla award for scientific research for 2013 has been given to Rajesh Gopakumar, a theoritical physicist at the Harish Chandra Research Institute in Allahabad. 46-year-old Gopakumar has been awarded for his contribution in the Quantum Field Theory and String Theory. The G D Birla award for scientific research was instituted in 1991 by K K Birla Foundation to recognise significant scientific research undertaken by Indian scientists below the age of 50, working in India. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh and a citation. The selection of the award is made by a board comprising eminent scientists including Asis Datta and Anupam Varma. Born on December 14, 1967, Gopakumar is a theoritical physicist who has made significant contributions to the understanding of String Theory and Quantum Field Theory. He is a recipient of several other awards, including B M Birla Science prize in 2004. (PTI)

Complete Tejpal trial in 60 days, prosecution tells court

Panaji: The prosecution in the Tehelka rape case Friday moved a formal application seeking to fast track the trial within 60 days. The application was moved to the trial court by Francis Tavora, public prosecutor. “Our prayer is that since this is a sensitive case involving an important personality, the trial should be completed within 60 days,” Tavora said. A junior colleague accused former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal of rape during ThinkFest, a high profile conference organised by the Tehelka founder in Goa. The victim claimed that she was sexually assaulted twice Nov 7 and 8. (IANS)

AAP expels two leaders for fraud

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Friday expelled two leaders as they allegedly tried to provide party tickets for monetary consideration. Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal appealed to ticket seekers that they should not give money to any party member who have assured them of providing tickets. “Two members, Aruna Singh (convener of Awadh zone) and Ashok Kumar (treasurer, Hardoi) have been suspended from the party membership as they were found to be indulging in providing party tickets on the pretext of money (sic),” Kejriwal told media persons. The AAP leader also appealed to the media to inform the party about any such activity and conduct sting operations. (IANS)
