School table tennis makes debut in West Jaintia Hills

NE Adventist, JNV win basketball titles

SHILLONG: The District Level Inter School Sports Tournament (basketball and table tennis) for West Jaintai Hills concluded on Wednesday at Jrisalein Playground, Jowai.

The competition was organised by the office of the Jaintia Hills District Sports Officer.

This was the first time that a table tennis tournament, at an inter-school level, was contested in the district, according to a press release from the office of the DSO on Thursday.

Ten students partcipated in the boys’ category (singles and doubles), while four were involved in the girls’ division (singles only).

Meanwhile, eight schools took part in the boys’ basketball tournament, with four in the girls’ competition.

Honours were shared fairly evenly, with only North East Adventist School winning more than one event; the students of that school claimed the boys’ basketball and the boys’ table tennis doubles titles.

Government Boys Higher Secondary School finished runners-up in the basketball.

The table tennis doubles final was actually contested by two teams from North East Adventist, with Team A beating Team B.

JNV won the girls’ basketball trophy by defeating St Mary Mazzarello HS School.

Daplang I Langstang of Sawlyngdoh Higher Sec School took the boys’ table tennis singles crown, beating F Larautkima of North East Adventist.

The girls’ singles final was won by Riyadamonki Talang of Marian Hill Higher Sec School, who overcame Ebhamitre Thma from St Mary Mazzarello HS.

Dignitaries at the prize distribution ceremony included FB Basan, ADC, Deputy Commissioner’s office WJH; PR Bareh, Athletic Secretary, WJDSA, and S Tariang, a veteran badminton player from the state.
