‘Unkept promise’ disappoints family

NONGPOH: It has been weeks since Chief Minister Mukul Sangma assured to depute officials to meet the bereaved family members of Wanbok Syiem who was killed after being hit by an ambulance which was part of the CM’s convoy at Sumer. However, no one has allegedly turned up till date to console or compensate the family members of the deceased.

The aggrieved family members are demanding a government job for the widow of the deceased besides a suitable compensation.

Talking to The Shillong Times, Evangeline Syiem, the sister of the deceased, said that her brother did not see the ambulance coming and was hit by the speeding vehicle almost at the edge of the road.

The deceased was helping his aunt Jecinta Syiem in shifting furniture for a make shift food stall at Sumer when the tragedy struck.

She further alleged that her brother was not provided with any treatment by medical officer on duty, Dr. B Basiawmoit, while he was being brought to Shillong in the same ambulance that hit him.

Confirming that Syiem was alive when he was brought to the Civil Hospital, Shillong Evangeline claimed that Dr. Basiawmoit offered the family members Rs. 5000 as monetary help but Sumer Rangbah Shnong Anthony Sumer requested that the amount be increased to Rs 20000.

She claimed that Dr Basiawmoit called her to collect the amount from his office on the day of the victim’s funeral but she could not make it to Shillong on the said date.

“Since then we have not heard from Dr. Basiawmoit,” she added.
