SHILLONG: Lack of guidance of elders, shortcut to wealth and success are the factors which prompt the youths to take recourse to evil worships, according to experts.

The entire state is now concerned with the reported instances of evil worship which has set its foot even in Shillong after it was first reported in Garo Hills.

The Shillong Times on Tuesday spoke to people from different segments and sought their response on the entire episode of Satan worshipping.

Psychiatrist Dr. Sandy Syiem said that he does not advocate the practice of worshipping evil but he said that he does not have any grudge against any worshipping as long as it does not hurt humans or the society.

He also said that the ongoing situation of practicing Satan worship in the State is a direct failure of the elders who could not guide the youths and it is the adults who need to behave responsibly towards youths.

On the other hand, Archbishop Dominic Jala said that the instance of evil worship is a manifestation of the power of evil working in the society even as he cautioned people not to fall prey to such practice.

According to Arch Bishop, mostly youths join such practice as they need a shortcut to wealth and success as youths are promised wealth and success if they practice evil worship.

He said that the youths in schools and colleges are most vulnerable to this practice and all the churches are discussing the matter, adding the Church is also inviting families to have a proper care of their children.

When contacted, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal informed that the matter has been discussed with the Superintendent of Police and all localities and Churches have been asked to keep a vigil in their graveyards.

“Information is there about such practices but nothing has been reported to us so far,” Goyal said.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang also said that the police was trying to ascertain how far these instances were true and police was also trying to pinpoint the exact location of any evil worship that was being practiced.

“We are also keeping a watch on the graveyards,” he said.
