NONGPOH: Concerned over the contamination of Umtrew River by the waste discharged by Megh Agro-Vet Private Limited, a poultry farm company based at Mawthei village under Mawhati constituency, a conglomeration of 20 Rangbah Shnong on Monday demanded the immediate closure of the farm.

The Megh Agro-Vet Private Limited was served a 30-day deadline last month to clean the wastes as well as construct a proper drainage system so as to ensure that there is no further contamination of the Umtrew River.

As many as 20 villages depend on the Umtrew for their water supply. Following the end of the deadline, the conglomeration accompanied by the Extra Assistant Commissioner, M Lytan, conducted a spot inspection of the company as well as the areas from where it released the wastes.

During the inspection, the team found out that the company failed to construct a proper drainage system. Construction of a biogas plant at the premises did not impress the inspecting team. Agitated by the non-compliance of the company, the Rangbah Shnong demanded the senior district official to ensure immediate closure of the firm.

Lytan said that she will submit a report on her findings to the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District for necessary action in this regard.
