SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister, in-charge of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, RC Laloo said that the department has taken steps to control the sedimentation at Mawphlang reservoirs, primarily through the construction Silt Retention Dam across River Umiew and River Umtyngngar.

“But this step taken by the Government to control sedimentation of the reservoir is not sufficient in case if there is heavy rainfall and flood in the two rivers,” Prof Laloo said, during the Question Hour in the Assembly here on Monday.

Answering to supplementary questions of the Opposition leader, Dr Donkupar Roy, the Deputy Chief Minister further stated that they are looking into the various provision of the Meghalaya Catchment Area Protection Act, 1900 to protect the aforementioned reservoir.
