DG Assam Rifles reviews Nagaland security situation

Kohima: The newly appointed Director General Assam Rifles (DGAR) Lieutenant General R K Rana, reviewed the security situation in Nagaland, Assam Rifles sources said here on Tuesday. Rana was on a two-day maiden visit to the state capital – Kohima since yesterday called on Governor Ashwani Kumar and discussed steps being taken to further consolidate the security situation in the state, according to press release issued by PRO IGAR (North). During the course of his visit, the DG Assam Rifles had wide ranging discussions with the Governor to include the development projects being undertaken by the Assam Rifles in Nagaland. The ways in which the Assam Rifles could contribute to enhance job opportunities, education and sports facilities for the people of Nagaland were discussed, the PRO said. The DGAR also inaugurated the “Pineapple Canning Plant” established under Military Civic Action programme at Medziphema under Dimapur district. Prior to his departure today, the DGAR reminded all ranks of Assam Rifles that we should live up to our motto of “Friends of the Hill People”. (PTI)

Assam varsity suspends faculty member on disciplinary grounds

Silchar: An English department faculty member of the Assam University in Silchar has been placed under suspension following a complaint lodged by a woman officer of the central university. Dr Jaydeep Chakraborty was suspended yesterday as Vice Chancellor Somnath Dasgupta took action on pending disciplinary proceedings on a complaint lodged by a woman officer last year, a senior official of the university said on Tuesday. The officer had complained to the Vice Chancellor against Dr Chakraborty that he had insulted her in the presence of the members of a library-related sub-committee for National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) on December 20 last year, the official said. She had complained that the incident had hurt her self-respect and dignity as a women and that Dr Chakraborty had also sent a derogatory e-mail to her, he said. After receiving a written complaint, he said the Assam University had requested the CID and police to investigate into the matter. The CID had submitted its report on May 5 last, he added. (PTI)

Burglary in Nagaland Varsity Kohima Campus

Kohima: Nagaland University (NU) office ‘s administrative block Kohima campus at Meriema was ransacked by some unidentified miscreants, according to official sources on Tuesday. Rs 12,000 cash, powder milk, tea leaves and others items were taken stolen from the office on Sunday night. Sources said the main doors of the administrative block were broken and 10 rooms including the room of Pro-Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Deputy Director and others were ransacked where office files and documents were turned upside down. The incident came to light on Monday, when office was opened. A case has been registered under Chiephobozou Police Station and police were yet to make any breakthrough in the case till the filing of this report.(UNI)

Workshop on Assam’s Sattriya dance at Siliguri

Guwahati: A fortnight long workshop on Assam’s classical dance form Sattriya is underway at Siliguri in North Bengal under the initiative of Byatikram Mass Awareness and Social Development Organisation (Byatikram MASDO) and Sattriya Kendra of Sangeet Natak Akademi. The workshop is being conducted by Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Guru Manik Bora Borbayan and his two associates to 41 participants at the Darjeeling Public School auditorium till June 20, Byatikram MASDO president Saumen Bharatiya told the media here on Tuesday. “Sattriya, inspite of being one of the classical dance forms of India, is little known outside Assam. Our efforts are to popularise Sattriya Dance in the entire country. The workshop has been organised for this very reason”, Bharatiya said. “Recently we conducted a Sattriya Dance workshop in the Barak Valley in the state. We want to take Sattriya Dance to the masses outside Assam”, he said. The workshop’s Instructor Guru Mabnik Bora Borbayan said, “Sattriya has created great interest among the children of North Bengal. A lot of other people also wanted to participate in the workshop. So it is evident that the people have embraced Sattriya Dance”. (PTI)

Three-day Intl Film Festival to start from Wednesday

Itanagar: The essence of the International film will be tasted the people of the state, when a three-day ‘Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) – Arunachal Edition’ is going to start here from Wednesday. The three-day festival will screen selected and many award winning films of Mumbai International Film festival, featuring documentary, short and animation at Hotel Tosum in Naharlogun, about 15 km from here. The Festival will also features three documentary films on Arunachal Pradesh. The Parliamentary Secretary for IPR, Printing and Education, Bamang felix will inaugurate the programme. Films Division under the Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, in collaboration with the directorate of IPR, GoAP is organising the programme. Its a maiden attempt in Arunachal Pradesh and the festival has also been held in some of the North Eastern states like – Sikkim, Maipur and Nagaland. “MIFF in Arunachal Pradesh” will showcase some of the finest cinematic works realized in the last eight years throughout the world and thus presents an opportunity for cinema lovers and children of the state to watch these films. The Films Division of India was established in 1948 to articulate the energy of a newly independent nation. For more than six decades, the organisation has relentlessly striven to maintain a record of the social, political and cultural imaginations and realities of the country on film. It has actively worked in encouraging and promoting a culture of film-making in India that respects individual vision and social commit. (UNI)
