Public meeting deplores NGT mining ban

JOWAI: The Jaintia Coal Miners and Dealers Association (JCMDA) held a public meeting here on Wednesday where more than 5000 people, mostly coal mine owners and businessmen, daily wage earners were present besides prominent citizen, prominent businessmen and public representatives including Parliamentary Secretaries to the Government of Meghalaya, Justine Dkhar and Robinus Syngkon.

The meeting was called in order to make people aware of the NGT ban on coal mining and also what steps have been taken by the Association and the State Government.

The JCMDA Chief, Balios Swer briefly informed the people about various steps taken up by the Association and also by the State government to request the NGT to reconsider the ban on coal mining as it has affected the living of ten thousands.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Justine Dkhar informed that the State government was doing all the best it could to request the NGT to relax the ban imposed in the month of April.

The MLA from Mookaiaw, Robinus Syngkon who also spoke on the occasion, has called upon the women folk in the society to come forward and tell the NGT that no one can survive without utilizing mineral resources for human needs.

More than 5000 coal miners besides those who involved in coal mining and coal business activities attended the meeting.
