SHILLONG: North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has expressed concern over the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabodh Sukla’s refusal, despite promises, to take into consideration the report submitted by the Review Committee on Teachers’ Career Advancement Scheme. NEHUTA marched in protest against the vice-chancellor’s betrayal before the administration and demanded redressal of the teachers’ grievances. The VC, however, disappointed the teachers by not meeting them, NEHUTA said.
In a statement issued here on Friday, Prof. V Ruata Rengsi, president and Dr. M.S.N. Rahman, general secretary of NEHUTA, said the teachers body demanded that the review committee report presented to the University must to be brought up as an agenda in the emergency executive council meeting of the university that was held on Friday amidst protests from teachers, yet the agenda for review report was not placed in the executive council meeting.
In the previous executive council meeting held on June 17, the review committee report although placed in the agenda was however sidetracked. This has led to agitation from the teachers.
The committee had reviewed cases of promotion of teachers as per the Act, the Statute and Ordinances framed by UGC, MHRD and NEHU and had recommended “corrections” in the date of eligibility of promotion of teachers.
It was observed that teachers’ date of eligibility had been arbitrarily changed by the previous VC Prof. Amarnath Rai, who had also rejected a large number of teachers’ promotion cases by by-passing laid down rules and procedures in the course of interviews. The present VC, however, had earlier promised a judicious correction by setting up a review committee, which is now being reneged, NEHUTA said.
The NEHUTA resolved that the University needs to respond immediately to correct the situation and restore justice in the career of teachers, as per the review committee report. Further, the meeting also resolved to seek correction of pay anomalies of teachers.
