SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills District Administration will deploy magistrates to crack down on shops selling gutka and pan masala illegally.
The manufacture, storage and sale of gutka and pan masala containing tobacco and nicotine as ingredients are prohibited in the State under sub section (2) of section 30 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 for a period of one year. However, many shopkeepers are still selling the banned products.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said, “I will deploy my magistrates from Tuesday to crack down on shops where
these products (gutka and pan masala) are still sold.”
Goyal asserted that stringent action will be taken against the shopkeepers violating the ban.
