GNLA rebel killed in encounter

TURA: A suspected GNLA militant was killed on Wednesday in a gunfight with security forces that took place at Pakregre village near Rongjeng.

The gun battle which lasted an hour took place at a hilltop in Pakregre village in East Garo Hills district.

An unidentified militant – suspected to be of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) – was killed, while two others escaped, police said. According to East Garo Hills police chief Davies Nestell Marak, the group numbering around 22 was led by Chekam Marak alias Dawang, a senior GNLA cadre believed to be in the rank of a commander.

A pistol, a high-frequency wireless set, three mobile handsets and incriminating documents were recovered from the site, police said.
