Tura: Criminals from Bangladesh have raided a Garo village and looted cash and jewellery from a family at Jatrakona village of South Garo Hills during the early morning hours of Sunday.

The daring infiltration and robbery by a group of criminals have punctured holes on the vigilance of the BSF which mannes and patrols the border with neighbouring Bangladesh.

The criminals who crossed over from the neighbouring country were armed with knives and daggers, revealed the villagers. The attack on the village took place at around 2:30 in the morning.

The armed men targetted the house of Havingstone Sangma (39) by breaking open the door and forcibly entering inside.

According to the family, the dacoits looted cash to the tune of one lakh thirty thousand rupees. They also snatched the gold earrings of Havingstone Sangma’s wife before taking off with the looted items which included otherhousehold items.

Jatrakona lies close to the international border and not far from Gasuapara.

Cross border crimes are regular in the Garo Hills region despite the presence of the BSF which patrols the border belt.

One of the most common theft is cattle lifting and timber smuggling.

Of late two wheeler motorcycles have begun to be smuggled across the border by local criminals having nexus with gangs in that neighbouring country.

A majority of crimes occur in the dead of the night when the gangs cross over taking advantage of the darkness and the slack security vigil.
