Villagers allege nexus between BDO, gram sevaks

TURA: Concerned over the alleged irregularities of the Rongara-Siju BDO in providing equal job opportunities to the people, its citizens have sought the intervention of Rongara Legislature Rophul S Marak.

Accusing the Gram Sevaks of Rongara-Siju C&RD Block of hogging all Central and State sponsored contracts under various schemes, especially Backward Regions Grant Fund (BRGF), the citizens of the region have alleged partiality by the BDO by giving contracts only to the employees of the office.

“In other blocks, local contractors were given contracts under various Central and State interventions, whereas with one or two exceptions, there have been no such grants in Rongara-Siju block for the past ten years,” stated B.Ch Marak, a resident of Rongara in South Garo Hills District.

Marak, further, alleged that the Gram Sevaks of the Rongara-Siju Block, in connivance with the Block Development Officer, take up all the construction works, big or small, leaving the local contractors high and dry.

“The objective of having a Block Development Office is the economic uplift of the people through various interventions and infrastructure development works,” said Marak.

He added that the government appointed Gram Sevaks were playing double standards and reaping the benefits meant for the local people.

Marak has sought the intervention of local legislator Rophul S Marak and requested him to urgently look into the matter and initiate corrective measures so as to ensure equal opportunity to the people of the region.
