KPLT militant arrested, two injured in encounter
Diphu (Assam): A militant of the Karbi Peoples’ Liberation Tigers (KPLT) was arrested after an encounter with security forces, while two other injured cadres managed to escape in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district Monday. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the police and army launched an operation in Langlaksho village last night and was fired upon by a group of militant early this morning, police officials said. An encounter followed in which two militants were injured but they managed to escape while another was caught. The security forces recovered an AK-47 rifle and two pistols while hunt was on to nab the militants who had escaped, they said. (PTI)
Police firing during BJP-sponsored bandh in Silchar
Silchar (Assam): Police fired shots in the air to disperse two clashing groups here during a 12-hour bandh in Cachar district, which affected normal life Monday. The clash broke out when some supporters of BJP, which called the bandh, clashed with a group of people who were opposing the shutdown at Gopalpur in the heart of the town leaving some with minor injuries, police officials said. To control the situation, police fired in the air, they said. BJP called the bandh to protest against alleged atrocities on women in the district. The bandh began at 5 AM and normal life was affected with school, offices and business establishments remaining closed. (PTI)
School headmaster shot dead by unknown assailant
Jorhat (Assam): A headmaster of a school was shot dead by an unidentified person in Borbheta Tea Estate here Monday. Dwijen Gogoi, headmaster of Namunabagan Lower Primary School, was called out of the institution by an unidentified person. Upon his arrival, the accused shot him dead, Superintendent of Police Amanjeet Kaura said. The assailant fled from the scene. Gogoi died on the spot, he added. The motive was suspected to be personal enmity, but investigations are on, the SP said. (PTI)
Gogoi says BJP, Modi wave on the wane
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday said Modi wave in the country was “on the wane” as BJP had failed to get a simple majority in Maharashtra and just barely managed to cross the half-way mark in Haryana in the just concluded Assembly polls in the two states. “In spite of hectic election campaigning by Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi and other BJP leaders, the party just managed to cross the half-way mark in Haryana. In Maharashtra, the BJP did not get a simple majority,” Gogoi tweeted. “Is it a wave? Or is the wave on the wane?” he asked. The BJP secured 47 of the 90 assembly seats in Haryana and 122 of the 288 seats in Maharashtra, wresting power from the Congress in both the states. (PTI)
