Nonpayment of salaries

SHILLONG: The Shillong Municipal Employees Union has threatened to resort to agitation owing to nonpayment of the staff’s salary for the last two months.

President of the Union, S Pyngrope said that since the last couple of years, the staff is being subjected to irregular payment of salaries.

“As the month of November has started parents are running from pillar to post to meet their children’s basic requirements like payment of school fees,” he said.

The Union alleged that for years together the employees of the Shillong Municipality have been deprived of their just and genuine rights. It also informed that there was an industrial dispute between the management and the staff of the then Shillong Municipal Board in which the Industrial Tribunal under its Presiding Officer AK Basu passed an award in favour of the employees of Shillong Municipal Board which was published in the Assam Gazette on September 1, 1971.

Moreover, the Das Commission, which was constituted by the Government of Assam for revision of scale of pay, and dearness allowances were also extended to the Staff of Shillong Municipal Board according to the award.

“However, from 2010 onwards, the management has started to exploit the staff by denying them their basic rights and privileges. Since couple of years, the staff is being deprived of their salaries,” the Union said while urging people to bear with them.
