SHILLONG: The Opposition on Friday expressed its displeasure over the short duration of winter session of the State Assembly.

As soon as the House assembled, NPP leader James Sangma was on his feet to express resentment over the inadequate sittings of the winter session.

Sangma said that many important issues tabled by the Opposition would simply fall through due to short duration of the session.

He suggested that in the event of difficulty in adding more working days, the timing of the session should be extended till 3.30 or 4 PM instead of adjourning at 2 pm .

Sangma was supported by Chokpot MLA Clifford Marak as he said that the MLAs have submitted many motions, but it is doubtful whether the motions would be taken up for discussion due to short duration of the session

“What is the use of convening the session. If this is the situation, let the Government call for one day session,” Marak said. He also advocated that any assembly session should have at least 12 working days.

The words of the Opposition members, as usual, fell on deaf ears.

Later, Assembly Speaker AT Mondal while speaking to media persons on the matter tried to wash his hands off saying that it is the Government which proposes the number of days which is mandatory for any session and then the Business Advisory Committee which comprises MLAs from both ruling and Opposition prepares the calendar for the session.
