SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), a conglomeration of the various Village Dorbar and NGOs under Hima Sohiong in East Khasi Hills has strongly opposed any move to allow the BSF to acquire 60 acres land within Maharam area.
The JAC comprising of the Village Dorbar of Mawmaram, Kyllang-Jasap and Sohphoh-Pyrton along with the Seng Samla Shnong of Mawmram area, KSU Mawmaram Unit and HANM Mawmaram Unit during its meeting on November 29 have also resolved not to allow any individual or group to strike any kind of deal with the BSF to acquire the land.
“We have issue a clear cut directive to the land owner Hamlet Kharjana, Sordar of Mawmaram village Handing Kurbah and land agent Kmel Nongbri to stop all negotiations with the BSF for acquiring the land,” Mawmaram village dorbar secretary JR Mawlong told newsmen while addressing a press conference here on Monday.
He said that they will not have any problem if the land is acquired for construction of hospitals and schools since the people of the area will benefit from it.
Meanwhile, Mawlong informed that they have already requested the Deputy Commissioner not to entertain any land documents over this proposed land.
“The DC also assured that he will immediately cancel the deal if there is any document issued by the land owner without the consent of the village dorbar and JAC,” Maharram village general secretary said.
Referring to the No Objection Certificate issued by Kharjana (land owner) to the BSF, he said that the land owner has assured that the NOC will be withdrawn and will return it to the Dorbar in a week’s time.
The Dorbar Shnong of Mawmaram, has also informed that the Dorbar has suspended the Sordar, Handing Kurbah of Mawmaram village for issuing of blank letterhead to people without the consent of the village dorbar.
Kurbah had confessed that he had given the NOC on a plain letter head which was signed and sealed as he blindly trusted the land owner.
According to the Sordar of the Maharam Village, Kharjana and a land agent Kmel Nongbri ,who is also a Sordar from Mawthap village had convinced him that they were planning to sell their land to doctor who is planning to construct a hospital.
Kurbah claimed that he later realised that he was duped by these people when he found out that the NOC which he signed on the blank letter head was for the BSF.
