Village headman gunned down in Kashmir

Srinagar:A village headman was killed on Saturday by terrorists in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, on a day when the last phase of assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir. Gulam Ahman Bhat, headman of Bomai village, was shot dead from close range by militants Saturday morning. While being shifted to hospital, he succumbed to his bullet injuries, a senior police official told IANS here. He is the third village headman to be killed since the assembly poll process started in October and the 13th headman to have been killed since 2011, the year Panchayat elections were held in the state after 30 years.The official said that a case has been registered.(IANS)

Villager killed by Maoist

Malkangiri (Odisha):A villager was killed by suspected Maoists in Kalimela area of Odisha’s Malkangiri district on the suspicion of being a police informer, police said on Saturday. District Superintendent of Police Mitrabhanu Mohapatra said the 32-year-old man, who ran a cycle repair shop at Chitrangpalli village haat, was taken away by a group of suspected ultrason Friday evening. Later, his body was found in a pool of blood with his throat slit along the road a little distance away from the haat. A hand written letter found from the spot claimed that CPI(Maoist) had decided to kill the man as he was functioning as a police informer, he said. Investigation is on and security had been strengthened in the area after the incident, police said. (PTI)

Cash and jewellery looted from LJP leader’s home

Jehanabad:Armed dacoits looted cash and jewllery worth ‘lakhs of rupees’ from the residence of district unit Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) president Arvind Kumar Singh in Murlidhar Colony under Town police station late on Friday night. The dacoits shot at and seriously injured Singh’s brother, Santosh Kumar, when he tried to resist the dacoity, police said. According to the police heavily armed dacoits numbering about 10 forced their entry into the residence of the LJP leader and shot at Santosh Kumar, injuring him seriously when he resisted the attempt. The dacoits them decamped with the booty of cash, jewellery and other items worth ‘lakhs of rupees’, police added. Injured Santosh Kumar has been referred to Patna Medical College Hospital for treatment by the doctors of Jehanabad Sadar Hospital, where he was taken first. Police have lodged an FIR against unidentified dacoits on the basis of a complaint lodged by Arvind Kumar Singh. Police are conducting raids at various places to nab the dacoits. (UNI)

Gang makes obscene video of retired official, extorts 5 lakh

Meerut:A woman and her gang allegedly extorted an amount of five lakh rupees from a retired bank officer by blackmailing to post his obscene video (MMS) online, police said on Saturday. 70-year-old Pritam Singh Bindra, resident of Delhi gate area, paid five lakh rupees from his pension and gratuity after he was blackmailed to make the video release on the internet. He was approached the second time and forced to deposit another amount, to which Bindra refused, police said. The blackmailers demanded one of his kidneys in return for his inability to pay the second amount. They threatened to release his obscene video online which was allegedly made by the accused, they said. According to the police, the victim met the accused eight months back and joined her health club. On 17th June, Bindra became unconscious after he was allegedly fed with some intoxicating substance in lieu of medicine at the club. Bindra alleged that the accused made his obscene video while he was in unconscious state of mind, and found himself in nude condition when he regained his consciousness after an hour.(PTI)

Youth dies as mobile phone explodes during charging

Bundi (Raj):A 24-year-old youth died after his mobile phone exploded while it was being charged in Korma village under Nainwa police station here, police said here. Rajulal Gurjar was on Friday using his mobile phone, while it was also put on charging. Suddenly, the mobile battery exploded with a high sound causing him severe burn injuries on chest and hand. He was rushed in an unconscious state to community health centre (CHC), Nainwa where he was declared brought dead by the doctors. Dr Samandar Lal Meena, In-charge at Nainwa CHC, who conducted the post-mortem, said that the victim had received severe burn injuries on chest and hands. The youth died due to electric shock and burn injuries, Meena said, adding the body was handed over to the family members after post-mortem. Nainwa police said that a case has been registered and investigation is on. (PTI)
