Assam CM stresses on opportuni-ties for disabled people

Guwahati:Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday termed the pers-ons with disabilities as assets and not liability because if proper opportu-nities are given, persons with disabilities can also contribute to the develop-ment of society in several ways.
Speaking as the Chief Guest in the valedictory function of a three-day seminar on ‘Capacity Buil-ding of Rehabilitation professionals for persons with disabilities in North East’ here, Mr Gogoi said the persons with disabilities  have the right to live with dignity and it is the social responsibility of every indi-vidual to respect their right.
Reiterating his commit-ment in bringing persons with disabilities to the main-stream, the chief minister said his government is working on a number of issues to facilitate their all round development.
He said he would instruct appropriate authorities to introduce courses for the rehabilitation professionals in colleges and universities to promote research in rehabilitation. The CM also said there is a need of taking more government policies and schemes for the per-sons with disabilities to bolster inclusive growth.
He called for symbiotic approach of all stake holders in building capacities of the rehabilitation professionals to empower the persons with disabilities. Earlier, chairper-son of the Rehabilitation Council of India, Prof S Mukhopadhyay gave a brief over view of the seminar.
The seminar was organi-sed by the Rehabilitation Council of India in asso-ciation with Sishu Sarothi  for Persons with Dis-abilities. (UNI)
