NONGPOH: In a noble gesture that would go a long way in uplifting the education sector in Umling C&RD Block in Ri Bhoi District, ten generous members of the Syiem clan donated a plot of land measuring 26 acres to the Education Department for setting up of a residential school at Nongrim Synjai, around 10 km from Nongpoh.
The generous donors include C.B. Syiem, president of Syiem clan, Phrip Syiem, Tuibon Syiem, Lambert P. Syiem, Theodora Syiem, Biatris Syiem, Elbina Syiem, Meristela Syiem, Bernadeth Syiem and Cirelation Syiem.
The school will be constructed under a Centrally-sponsored scheme at a cost of Rs.2.5 crore.
The foundation stone for construction of the school was inaugurated on Thursday by Chief Adviser to the State government, D.D. Lapang, in the presence of Ri Bhoi Addl Deputy Commissioner P.S. Kharkongor, Director of Educational Research and Literacy Ambrose Ch Marak, C.B. Syiem, the donors, headmen from various villages, the Syiem Raid and a large number of local residents including teachers and students of various schools.
Speaking on the occasion, Lapang said that the Central government has taken literacy as its top priority and added that education can eradicate the shadows of poverty, ignorance and ill health from the society. “Parents must understand the value of education and they should encourage their children to go to school,” he added.
Lapang also lauded and appreciated the Education department for their effort in taking up the task of construction of the residential school in a remote area and hoped that the school would help in providing quality education to school children of the area and the district as a whole.
He wanted the school authorities to appoint qualified teachers to improve the standards of teaching and urged the students to work hard with determination for a successful future.
