Police from Patharkhmah Outpost involved in murder: CSWO
SHILLONG: The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) has demanded that the report of J. Rymmai, Commandant of the Sixth MLP Battalion, be immediately provided to the family members of late P.J. Marbaniang, as the mother had sought for a copy of the report more than a week ago from Meghalaya Director General of Police Rajiv Mehta.
CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing alleged that the murder of Sub Inspector P.J. Marbaniang in his quarters at Patharkhmah Outpost in Ri Bhoi District attracted provisions of human rights violations as there was a suspicion of involvement of senior police officers of the District in the incident.
Kharshiing also alleged that the policeman’s body was not escorted to the Patharkhmah CHC or GNRC, Guwahati, by the DSP present in the area, but by a police constable, later to be followed by the OC of Nongpoh, yet the OC of Byrnihat was called to get exemptions for taking out the body from another state without a postmortem done. She further said that the body was carried back to Nongpoh CHC from GNRC without any postmortem exemption order from the Magistrate in Assam, even though a medico legal case was entered in the GNRC.
“It is a known fact that there is extortion by police in many areas where illegal coal is being transported and Patharkhmah was one such area where trucks ply and police extortion prevails. Marbaniang was an impediment to illegal extortion by the police working in Patharkhmah Outpost and they needed to get rid of him, hence the murder,” Kharshiing alleged.
The CSWO also said that it suspected involvement of the police in the murder and the ploy to cover up the crime. Even the report of J. Rymmai was being hidden despite the huge public interest in the case, it added.
