SHILLONG: The use of the word ‘disabled’ in Assembly on Monday instead of ‘differently abled’ or ‘physically challenged’ has irked Tura legislator John Leslee Sangma, who insisted the Government to change the terminology while addressing persons with disabilities.
In reply to a question by Jemino Mawthoh (UDP) on the categories of persons who avail social assistance under Chief Minister’s Scheme, Social Welfare Minister Deborah Marak said as many as 7043 disabled avail the benefit.
However, the South Tura legislator said that the Government should not use the word disabled and instead should use differently abled or physically challenged.
The Minister assured that she would look into the matter.
