Guwahati: In view of the upcoming BTC elections, the joint operation group of thecounter-insurgencyunified command structure met at the circuit house in Kokrajhar district of Bodoland TerritorialAutonomous District Council (BTC) on Thursday to review the current security situation in the poll-bound BTAD.
It dwelt on the formulation of future security plans to ensure that BTAD remains peacefuland all probable causes which can disturb the peace and harmony in the region are dealt with an ironhand.A defence source here informed that the security situation in BTAD needed strict monitoring in view ofthe upcoming BTC elections scheduled for April 8 next.
Due to the concerted efforts and relentlessoperations against NDFB (S), the outfit now remains in a decimated state and is not in a position todisturb the peace and harmony in the region. But due to increased participation of various National andlocal parties in the polls, there can be a possibility of some kind of violence and ethnic clashes.
This year the candidates contesting for 40 constituencies of BTC have increased from 149 in 2010 to 316this time, an increase of almost 51%.The operational group meeting was chaired by Lt Gen Sarath Chand, GOC, 4 Corps and attended by Senior Police officers including RM Singh, IPS, ADGP (Law & Order) Assam and DCs and SPs of all the fourBTAD districts.
Besides reviewing the security situation in BTAD an overall analysis of security situation of western Assam areas was discussed and firm action plan was chalked out to deal with the terrorist activities.
It may mentioned that the Joint Secretary (in charge of Northeast) of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Sambhu Singh was in Kokrajhar on Wednesday to take stock of the law and order situation inrespect of April 8 election to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).
