Disposal of expired medicines by Civil Hospital authorities

SHILLONG: In the wake of the disposal of huge stock of expired medicines by Shillong Civil Hospital authorities, the youth wing of the UDP (Shillong City) on Wednesday made a spot enquiry at the hospital on Wednesday.
On enquiry the hospital Civil Surgeon, Dr M Borthakur, said that the medicines that were disposed of were supplied to the hospital from the Health department’s central stores and were reportedly procured under NRHM and were not indented by the hospital.
“The medicines being uncommon to general ailments were lying unused till expiry and then disposed of. The question arises as to why such a huge amount of medicines were procured without the requirement of the hospital,” UDP joint secretary P Nongkynrih said in a statement.
According to him, the Civil Surgeon also informed that all supplies related to the hospital were independently executed by the central stores of the Health Department.
The delegation of the UDP’s youth wing rued that money meant to be used for providing better health services to the public, especially the marginalized sections of the society was being wasted due to mismanagement.
Not being satisfied with this preliminary enquiry, the delegation decided to further examine the matter and bring it to its logical end.
