Poacher killed, two apprehended 

Morigaon (Assam): A poacher was killed and two others have been apprehended by forest protection force personnel in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Morigaon district on Friday, a forest official said. A gang of poachers tried to enter the wildlife sanctuary last night to kill rhinos and take away their horns and came face to face with the forest staff near Pagladuba forest camp early this morning, Sanctuary Ranger Ashok Das said here. The poachers fired upon the forest guards and heavy exchange of fire took place killing one poacher while two others were apprehended. One rifle and several rounds of bullets were recovered from the possession of the poachers who were suspected to have come from Nagaland. (PTI)

Ex-serviceman killed in road mishap

Rangiya (Assam): A former serviceman was killed in a road mishap and 15 women were detained alongwith 300 litres of country liquour in Assam’s Kamrup district, police said on Friday. A speeding bus knocked down a 50-year old former army man at Boko on National Highway 37 late last night. The person has been identified as Krishna Kanta Boro and his body has been sent for postmortem to Guwahati Medical College Hospital. In another incident, the excise department seized 3000 litres of country liquour from a Guwahati-bound bus at Rangiya on National Highway 31 and 15 women have been detained in this connection.The bus has been seized and further investigations were on, police added. 21 deaths in Mizoram due to TB

Aizawl: At least 21 people have died in Mizoram during the first three months of this year (January to March) due to tuberculosis, state health department today said. The officials said that 2,703 people were tested for suspected TB cases of which 540 were found to be infected. Of the 540 people found to be infected with TB, 44 were HIV positive, the officials said, adding that the majority of AIDS patients in the state died due to TB. The officials said that 83 per cent of those infected with TB were cured during the period. (PTI)
