Guwahati: The Assam unit of BJP on Saturday announced that it will be sitting on a demonstration to expose the alleged failures of the ruling Congress in the state on all fronts.
State BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharyya said a 24-hour sit-in demonstration will be staged by all incumbent MLAs and MPs, former MLAs and MPs and office-bearers of the party from 1100 hrs on September 21 at Guwahati.
He, however, added that the Kamrup (metro) district administration was yet to grant permission for the venue of the demonstration.
“We have sought permission for the demonstration at the dharna field near the secretariat.”
“If we are denied permission, we will sit in our protest in the middle of the road,” he said.
Former influential Congress minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma, who had recently joined the BJP.
Sharma said the demonstration would be done by about 75 people in a peaceful manner, and yet the administration was denying them permission.
“Whether we get permission or not, we will register our protest and also submit a memorandum to the Governor with our demands,” Dr Sharma said.
The BJP has accused the state government of diverting funds meant for development towards payment of salaries, bringing all development to a standstill.
It also accused the state government of failing to take up advance planning to meet the annual flood problem and demanded adequate monetary compensation for next to kin of those killed in floods and for farmers who lost their crops and land.
The party also expressed concern at the law and order situation in the state and claimed that the growing incidents of rape, murder and other crimes have put the people in a state of panic and fear.
The BJP further accused the Congress government of selecting beneficiaries for social welfare schemes based on party leanings.
Thus depriving deserving people not affiliated to Congress from the ambit of these schemes. (UNI)
