DSP found hanging in TN
Coimbatore: Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Tiruchengodu in Namakkal District, Ms R Vishunupriya (28), was found hanging at her quarters on  Friday evening.  DSP Vishnupriya was the investigating officer in the sensational murder case of Dalit engineering graduate V Gokulraj.  Vishnupriya’s body was first found by her driver  on Friday evening and he informed his senior officials. Police sources said that Ms. Vishnupriya joined duty on Friday  after taking two days leave. She had attended a case in connection with a road blockade over the assault on a lecturer on Friday morning. She had mentioned in her suicide note that she was not able to meet the requirements of the job and there was no pressure from higher officials.   Vishnupriya, who was unmarried, was the investigating officer in the murder case of V Gokulraj, whose body was found on the railway track near Pallipalayam on June 24.  She had arrested more than 12 persons in that case and are in search of the main accused Yuvaraj, President of Dheeran Chinnamalai Peravai. Police are investigating whether Vishnupriya was murdered or she herself committed suicide, the sources added. (UNI)
Mob attacks police station
Suri (WB): A group of people on Saturday raided a police station in Birbhum district, allegedly assaulted a police officer, and forcefully released a TMC activist who later surrendered before the police after several hours. Police said a large group of people, including women, attacked Kankartala police station, assaulted its officer-in- charge Abul Ali and took away Khilafat Ali who was arrested a couple of hours back in connection with an old case. He, however, surrendered before the police later. Action will be taken against him according to the law, the police said. Khilafat Ali is known to be a Trinamool Congress worker in the area. No one was arrested in connection with the attack on the police station till late night. (PTI)
Coastal Clean-up Day
Chennai: International Coastal Cleanup Day was observed by INS Adyar, the Navy Office here on Saturday at the sea shore, adjacent to the Navy Office.  More than 1000 Naval personnel comprising Officers, Sailors and their families and school students participated in the coastal clean-up activity.  A large quantity of non-bio degradable material was removed from the beach. Commodore Alok Bhatnagar, Naval Officer-in-Charge (Tamil Nadu & Puducherry) inaugurated the Coastal Clean-up Day programme and took part in the cleaning activity along with the Naval personnel and their families, a Defence release said here. AAP leader Phoolka resigns
New Delhi: AAP leader and senior advocate H S Phoolka on Saturday announced his resignation from all party posts, saying he wants to devote “undivided attention” to the anti-Sikh riots cases which are at a “crucial juncture”. In a bid to scotch murmurs of a rift with the party leadership over his decision, Phoolka said that he would remain an “inherent” part of AAP, which he said is standing on the cusp of winning the next assembly polls in Punjab. “After detailed discussions with (Arvind) Kejriwalji and with his approval, it has been decided collectively that I quit active politics and resign from party posts, to enable myself to entirely devote myself for getting justice for the victims,” Phoolka said. Eight injured in cylinder blast
Badaun: Eight members of a family were on Saturday injured when portion of a house collapsed due to explosion in a gas cylinder in Ushait area here, police said. The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the cylinder caught fire and exploded as family members of Phubram alias Munna were preparing for breakfast, Sub Divisional Magistrate O P Tiwari said. He said that the injured have been admitted to a hospital. (PTI)
Erring shopkeepers fined
Srinagar: As many as 73 erring shopkeepers were fined Rs 85,400 for violating the Essential Commodities Act in Srinagar city from September 9 to 17, an official spokesperson here on Saturday said. He said the Enforcement squad headed by the Assistant Director Enforcement of Consumers Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) conducted market checking from September 9 to 17 in different areas of Srinagar City. The areas, where market checking was conducted, included Lal Chowk, Dalgate, Nowpora, Rainawari, Sada Kadal, Parimpora, Qamarwari, Gojiwara, Shalimar, Fateh Kadal, Nawa Bazar, Karfalli Mohalla, Ganga Bugh, Semina, Raj Bagh, Soitang, Drugjan, Safa Kadal, Watal Kadal, Zadibal and Nowhatta, he said. During market checking, 214 business establishments were inspected and a penal sum of Rs 85,400 was collected as fine from 73 erring shopkeepers for violation of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, he added.
