SHILLONG: The Sukanya Samriddhi, a scheme which can be availed by the parents or legal guardian of a girl child, has picked up well in the State with around 4000 accounts opened in the last nine months.
The parent or legal guardian can open the account in the name of the girl child in any post office or authorized branches of some of the commercial banks.
Speaking to media persons here on Wednesday, Chief Post Master General, North East Circle SC Barmma said that similarly around 30,000 Sukanya Samriddhi accounts have been opened in six Northeastern states (Assam not included).
Stating that there are around 3000 post offices in Meghalaya, Barmma urged the people to avail the benefits of other schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Sukanya Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Scheme and Atal Pension Yojana which have also been launched in the state.
He also said that the Northeast region is doing quite well in the Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) with many people coming forward to avail the scheme.
Stating that post offices are safest for people to store their savings, he said that all the 3000 post offices in the state will be connected by a ‘single network’.
The India Posts has ventured into ATM services and many people in Shillong are already availing the services.
