Rs 10 lakh paid to custodial death victim kin

SHILLONG:  The state exchequer has become poorer by Rs 10 lakh after the government recently deposited the amount to the registry of Meghalaya High Court  as compensation for the mother of victim of custodial death, Balasan Marak (20) in West Garo Hills.
Earlier on September 16, the Court had directed the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi to deposit Rs 10 lakh with the registry of the Court
Balsan, who was arrested by police in connection with the torture of 12 young girls in Tura, died on May 20 last year while he was in judicial custody after being brought from the Tura district jail to the Civil Hospital for treatment.
