GNLA kidnaps policeman, civilian in Garo Hills

Abducted policeman is from Shillong

TURA: Suspected GNLA militants on Friday abducted two persons, a police personnel and an Assam-based civilian, in North Garo Hills district.
Battalion head constable (havildar) Khomraj Bhattarai, who belongs to the 6th MLP Bn, was on his way to Songsak ,his place of posting,  in a public transport when suspected GNLA militants belonging to area commander Pilliport D Shira waylaid the vehicle at Tapa Darengchi area, approximately 16 kms from Mendipather town. The incident took place at around 7am.
The militants dragged out Bhattarai from the vehicle along with another civilian, believed to be from Krishnai town in Assam, and took them away into the forests.
North Gato Hills police have arrested Ronangbill Marak of Dilma Monngpanggro and Lukash R Marak of the same village in this connection. Interrogation is in progress.
Unconfirmed reports say that Rakban D Shira@Piliport had killed Bhattarai in the jungles as per Sohan D Shira’s direction. However police are verifying these inputs from the villagers.
After the abduction, the vehicle was allowed to proceed towards Songsak and it was only at the next police outpost in Dagal, East Garo Hills that the frightened passengers narrated the nightmare they faced on the road.
Police from both North and East Garo Hills swung into action and launched simultaneous operations in the area.
The kidnapped havildar is believed to be from Shillong and had taken leave to be with his family and was returning to join work when the incident occurred.
Friday’s incident took place within a week after the Block Development Officer posted in South Garo Hills district was released from captivity by the GNLA militants.
