5 dead, 4 injured in
Arunachal accident
Itanagar: At least five persons were killed and four others injured when the vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge between Palizi and Ramda in West Kameng district. The SUV carrying nine passengers was on its way on Friday evening to Seppa, the district headquarters of East Kameng district, from Itanagar, local MLA Tapuk Taku said today. The accident occurred as the vehicle was negotiating a sharp bend, he said, adding that five persons were killed on the spot. Taku said that one of the injured has been shifted to Tezpur in a critical condition. He also informed that he has contacted East Kameng DC SK Singh and the East Kameng Social Welfare and Cultural Organisation chairman and secretary asking them to extend all help to the victims. Confirming the incident, DGP S Nithyanandam said that a police team had rushed to the spot, which is located 40km from Seppa. The DGP added that the four injured passengers have been admitted to the district hospital at Seppa. (PTI)
NE development needed for Act East policy to succeed: Guv
Aizawl: For the success of the Act East policy of the Centre, development of North Eastern region is necessary, Mizoram Governor Lt Gen Nirbhay Sharma has said. “For the success of Act East Policy, the North East Region has to be strengthened first,” Sharma said during an interaction with academicians from abroad and across the country, who attended a seminar in Mizoram University, last night. He expressed optimism on materialisation of the Act East Policy, but added that it was important to develop the region first and secure better relations with countries bordering the North East. The region would soon be the gateway of India to South Asia, he said. (PTI)
DST-inspire programme concluded
GUWAHATI: University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya has been entrusted with the responsibility of conducting the Inspire Internship Science Camp from November 2 to 6 by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. The Science Camp is held to motivate and inspire the talented students to take up Science and Research as a career. The Science Camps was addressed by top scientists of North East India, academicians and eminent authors of science and technology from different universities of repute. The students were also exposed to hands-on experience in advanced laboratories and several activities led by invited professors from different institutions and universities. More than seventy students from various schools of Meghalaya like, St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, St Margaret’s Higher Secondary School, JNV Williannagar and Christ International School Barapani have participated in the camp. Being a science and technology university USTM encourages these types of events and thus hopeful to cover more number of schools in future science camps. During the inaugural program N Rajmuhon Singh from the Department of Chemistry and N Debananda from the dept of Biochemistry from Manipur University were present as the chief guests.
