SHILLONG: A grand launching ceremony has been planned for the 12th South Asian Games to be co-hosted by the city from February 5-16.
A musical theatre showcasing the beauty and culture of Meghalaya and the North East will enthrall the crowd during the launching of the 12th South Asian Games 2016 here on February 6. The event which will kick off at the JN Stadium at 5 pm will be hosted by renowned quiz master Siddhartha Basu.
The musical extravaganza will see as many as 800 people take part in the performances at a time even as contingents of the eight participating nations will march on the pitch in a ceremony which will introduce the athletes and officials of the South Asian nations to the crowd. The event aims to showcase the scenic beauty and culture of Meghalaya to the world.
Dancers from Meghalaya and other parts of North East will also perform on the occasion. Adding to the attraction will be the Shillong Chamber Choir, Venetia Warshong and Meiyang Chang of Indian Idol fame.
The eight disciplines to be held in Shillong will also feature in the musical extravaganza.
The event will conclude with fireworks and release of lanterns.
A senior government official said that it is a matter of pride and immense joy for Meghalaya to host the Games and athletes and officials for the participating nations. Key officials and dignitaries from the participating nations are also expected to attend the launching ceremony.
