TURA: The NPP MDC from Shyamnagar constituency SG Esmatur Mominin has lent support to the participation by non-tribals in district council elections on the grounds that it has been taking place since the inception of GHADC.
In a statement to the media, the sitting MDC, one among two non-tribals to make it to the district council in last year’s elections, said, “It is a fundamental right of the non-tribals which is guaranteed by the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India. That is why we have been exercising our right to vote since the time the GHADC was created.” He added that there are a sizeable number of non-tribal populations in the Garo Hills districts that require various services under the district council.
Urging upon all to abide by the law and the country’s constitution, the Shyamnagar MDC cited the leadership of Meghalaya’s pioneers Late Captain Williamson A Sangma and Late Purno A Sangma who were given respect throughout the country by people from all communities and faith because they strictly stood by the Constitution of India.
“No one should infringe on the fundamental rights of others until and unless the Constitution is amended by Parliament,” he cautioned.
