TURA/SHILLONG: The leaders of the BJP in Garo Hills have passed a resolution expressing their desire to contest the upcoming by-election to the Tura Lok Sabha seat slated for May 16.
Top BJP leaders from Garo Hills held a high -evel meeting at the residence of the party MDC Bhupendra Hajong on the GHADC premises in Tura on Wednesday to discuss the upcoming by-election which has been necessitated due to the death of Purno A Sangma last month.
Although the BJP high command in Delhi is not keen to contest the by-election in view of the close relation the Late Sangma and his NPP shared with the top BJP leadership including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, the local BJP leaders in Garo Hills, however, think otherwise.
The meeting attended by several senior BJP leaders including Edmund K Sangma, Billykid A Sangma, mandal committee leaders from different parts of Garo Hills adopted a resolution to put up a candidate for the by-election.
The resolution expressing willingness on the part of the Garo Hills unit to contest the upcoming election has been forwarded to the state and central leadership of the party to take the final call.
Model code : The returning officer for Tura Parliamentary Constituency, has asked all government departments, political parties, candidates and all concerned to adhere to the model code of conduct and instructions of the Election Commission of India which came into force on April 19.
