SHILLONG: The customary eating of betel nut (Kwai) is killing people in the Hill State, said cancer specialist from AIIMS, New Delhi Dr Abhishek Shankar.
Addressing media persons here on Friday on the eve of NEC’s Pink Chain Cancer Campaign Dr Shankar said that cancer was curable and preventable thanks to the technological advancements.
He however rued that most people come to hospitals only in the stage III and IV and it becomes quite difficult to save them then.
Stating that doctors need to be properly educated about cancer, he added that people should know the signs and symptoms of cancer.
He also urged people to avoid local treatment when suffering from cancer.
Meanwhile, NEC Secretary, R Muivah informed that the NEC’s Pink Chain Cancer Campaign’ set to begin on Saturday will send a message that the ‘disease is curable’.
The campaign will be inaugurated by the Union DoNER minister Jitendra Singh at the North Eastern Council (NEC) Auditorium in Nongrim Hills.
