SHILLONG: The sub-committee constituted by the state government to look into the inclusion of Khasi in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution submitted its report to Deputy Chief Minister in charge Education, RC Laloo recently.
Earlier, the main committee constituted by the state government to pursue the inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule had entrusted the matter to the sub-committee.
Laloo, who is the chairman of the main committee, told reporters on Monday that though the report of the sub-committee was submitted to him, he has again referred the matter with a few queries to the member secretary of the main committee, Matsiewdor War, who is also the Director, Arts and Culture.
“I will meet the member secretary  before we finalize the report to be sent to the Centre for consideration,” he added.
The task of the sub-committee was to examine whether Khasi language fulfils all the criteria laid down by the Centre for the language to find a place in the Eighth Schedule.
It was on November 28, 2014 that the main committee headed by Laloo was notified to take necessary steps to include the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule.
