SHILLONG: A demand to set up Domestic Workers Welfare Board and protection of the rights of thousands of domestic workers was made by various organizations working for the rights of such workers in the State on Thursday.
In a memorandum to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma during the celebration of International Domestic Workers’ Day here on Thursday, the North Eastern Regional Domestic Workers Movement Meghalaya, Ferrando Domestic workers Alliance and All Meghalaya Domestic Workers Union, who organised the event, drew his attention to the plight of domestic workers when it came to protection of their rights and social security.
The organizations urged the CM to set up a  separate ‘Domestic Workers Welfare Board’ which may perform various functions like registration of domestic workers, provide assistance in case of accident, provide medical expenses for treatment of ailments, provide maternity benefit to the women domestic workers, etc. They also called for fixation of wages for domestic workers under Minimum Wage Act, a separate Domestic Workers Welfare Board and inclusion of domestic workers in the welfare schemes.
