SHILLONG: The State Unit of BJP has asked the government to de-notify the political appointees who are heading the loss-making public sector undertakings.
The issue was discussed on Saturday during the second state executive meeting of BJP Meghalaya held on Saturday in Shillong.
In a statement issued to the media on Sunday, Basu Chakraborty, Spokesperson BJP Meghalaya State Committee said that the party is of the view that the political appointments should made in those boards or corporations  which are making profit.
“Also, the total number of political appointees should not be more than the total of  members of the Assembly. Hence, we demand that those political appointees who have been appointed in those non-profitable Government undertakings should be removed or de-notified.
The BJP leader said that the reduction in the number of political appointees will bring some relief to the state exchequer.
The meeting expressed its commitment to execute the economic resolution adopted at National Executive Meeting held on June  12  and 13 at Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh .
The BJP expressed concern over the economy of the State which is grossly mishandled resulting in huge over draft and bankruptcy culminating in even non-payment of salaries to teachers of Government  aided Schools.
“Developmental works including of roads  have come to a standstill in the name of paucity of funds citing the NGT ban on mining of coal and unfriendly Government at the Centre. Moreover, the funds provided by the Central Government are mismanaged or siphoned off just to please the Ministers and MLAs of the ruling dispensation” the BJP alleged.
The financial position of the State will be virtually on the verge of bankruptcy, if immediate remedial measures are not adopted, the BJP said, while adding that the party demands the state government to adopt austerity measures and to curb expenditures incurred on unnecessary tours and travels by Ministers
The state BJP also said that it will endeavor towards the establishment of an egalitarian society, a prosperous Meghalaya where even the poorest of poor will be provided with the basic necessities of life.
“Meghalaya remains plagued with low economic growth despite the huge budgetary allocation for the agricultural sector by the Modi Government  in the last Union budget”, the BJP said .
Agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the people of Meghalaya. It is indeed distressing to note that the state government has not been able to utilize the various schemes initiated by the Central Government for the development of the agricultural sector, the BJP said.
According to BJP, most for the farmers are unaware of schemes like Kisan Credit Card, Soil Health Card, and Crop Insurance Scheme and others.
The BJP urged the state government to uplift the condition of the farming community by facilitating them with these central schemes along with adequate storage provisions. The party also asked the government to take necessary steps to develop horticulture, provide adequate incentives to food and fruit processing industries and to ensure that quality seeds and other inputs are easily available to the farmers.
The BJP said that the recent visit of the Prime Minister  Narendra Modi to Mawphlang has added a fillip to the tourism industry.
Stating that tourism alone will be able to generate substantial revenue and provide enough employment opportunities to the people of the state, the BJP  asked the state government to take appropriate measures to create tourism friendly environment, provide sustainable infrastructure and go for reasonable publicity with a view to encourage the flow of tourists to the State.
