Our hope lies in the Judiciary

Editor,

The recent intervention by High Court into-the affairs and functions of- Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) is something which needs to be lauded and praised. It is a known fact that meritorious candidates sans money or political back up can never make it to the list of the selected candidates in all of the MPSC exams. The rise in the assets of the MPSC members or their kith and kin during the period of their service as MPSC members is a big puzzle which cannot be easily answered. So far, whenever important posts are advertised, the unofficial results of successful candidates are already known much before the announcement of the final list of successful candidates. The reason being they are blessed candidates. Several candidates who did really well in the last MCS written exams scored zero marks in the viva voce and their names failed to appear in the list of the selected candidates, whereas those who scored very less in the written exams scored full marks in the viva voce.

Same is the case with the last selection of candidates to the posts of Enforcement Inspectors, Transport Department. The final list of successful candidates came not from the board of MPSC members but from the powerful table of the person who is at the helm of affairs in the state. The selected candidates had already celebrated their achievements prior to the declaration of the results. Even in the present case of the current posts of Enforcement Inspectors, again of Transport Department where viva voce was conducted on the 21st June 2016, the unofficial result is already out. And we all know the list of the ‘would be successful’ candidates.

The irony of the current situation is that one of the members of MPSC openly canvassed that candidates should meet one of the local MLAs of Jaintia Hills and get a note of proposal from him if the candidate wishes to be successful or to score high marks from this member. Thus, MPSC exams are simply formalities to legitimize the ‘chosen’ candidates. In Meghalaya, CBI has several past history of being a toothless body. I am sure even in this case, nothing will be done after the investigation and no action will be taken even if anomalies are detected. Reason? The present government is an expert at shielding corrupt officials and ministers. The education scam is one of the best examples of this!

The last hope which we the citizens of this state have is in the judiciary. I request the judiciary to reopen cases of all exams to important gazetted posts and screen the selection of successful candidates to various posts. I am sure the findings will lead to a situation which will be worse than a Pandora’s box.

Bright side of the Emergency

Editor,

I am quite amused that many especially our netas including our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in his ‘Mann ki baat’ dubbed the emergency imposed by our Late Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi in June, 1975 as dark days of Indian Democracy. But I must admit that for us the Aam Aadmi, it was the brightest days of our lives because during that emergency, trains left their departed and arrived on time. There was punctuality and full attendance in offices. All shops displayed the prices of their wares for the buyers to see. There was no cheating, no hanky- panky business then.

Who will redress our grievances?

Editor,

Through your esteemed daily I wish to bring to the notice of the Government the plight of students who have been deprived of their right to study or survive for no fault of theirs. They have taken admission in the Government affiliated or recognized institute but that has suddenly closed. Why should the student ssuffer (mentally and monetarily) and waste away their valuable time and energy for this inefficient and reckless system of the Government? It was only after the Government recognized or affiliated such institutes that the students enrolled themselves with them. Then why should the student suffer after the very same Government invalidates or dissociates itself from such institute and also reject the students who have passed out or are still studying in these institutes? I suggest that for such reckless or illmotivated attitude of the Government – the concerned higher authority should single out the person (s) responsible person and put them behind bars.

Yours etc.,
