SHILLONG: The state population has touched 32 lakh this year.  This is 2.33 lakh more when compared to the Census of 2011, where population of Meghalaya stood at 29.67 lakh.
This was revealed by Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh at a programme organized to mark the world population stabilization fortnight at Block Development Office, Mawkyrwat on Monday
Speaking on the occasion, Lyngdoh said that while India is the second highest in the world in population, if there is no check on the population, India would overtake China in near future.
Stating that Meghalaya has a population of around 32 lakh in 2016, the Deputy Chief Minister stressed on the need for a stabilized population as population explosion has certain drawbacks and implications.
He urged the people to take necessary steps and precautionary measures to avoid over population which affects health, environment, growth and development.
According to Lyngdoh, a family should be well planned so as to avoid ignorance and poverty. He encouraged people to take the advice of doctors about family planning to curb over population. Lyngdoh advises the expecting mothers to avail the benefit of Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matriva Abhiyan (PMSMA) so as to ensure antenatal care to women.
