Chokpot sub-division without access to tap water for 2years

SHILLONG: Several pressure groups from Garo Hills have sought the intervention of PHE Minister Prestone Tynsong to take action against the person in charge of Chokpot PHC for closing the public road to the community by trying to construct a wall.
Concrete posts have been forcibly put up on the road affecting people’s movement, according to the pressure groups which urged the Minister to take steps to reopen it to the public.
In a letter addressed to the PHE Minister, GSU, ADE and FKJGP said the road had been used by the community of Chokpotgre long before the PHC was established at its present location.
In a meeting attended by GSU, ADE and FKJGP, it was aired that the PHC had encroached on the land on the other side of the carpeted road and had built quarters.“The people are left without any other alternate motorable linkage road. A number of important institutions are affected by the inconsiderate, thoughtless and ill-advised actions of the doctor in charge of the PHC,” the pressure groups said, adding that due to this, there is no proper route to reach the Chokpot Indoor Stadium.
The closure of the road also affected the post office of the sub-division, the B.C Dutta Government L.P School, U.P English Government School, Village Court, and the ICDS centre.
Meanwhile, GSU said the people of the Chokpot sub-division have no access to tap water for almost two years now and the closure of the road has added to their woes.
The school and the post office do not have running tap water. During wedding and other functions and ceremonies, water supply is a necessity and without running tap water or even with it, extra supply of water is a necessity, the pressure groups said. They pointed out that PHE tankers or other forms of water carriages are used and suddenly there is no motorable road to connect them.
“The PHE has gone defunct and supposedly cites problem of lack of funds to operationalise the existing waterlines or to replace worn-out water pipes,” GSU said and added that the closure of the road has brought more miseries.
The pressure groups have threatened to resort to agitation if the road is not reopened.
