SHILLONG: Tura MP Conrad Sangma has stressed on the need to strengthen railway connectivity in the landlocked Garo Hills region.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Conrad said even late Tura MP Purno Sangma was keen to develop railway connectivity in Garo Hills. The MP has already written to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on exploring the possibilities of developing tracks in Garo Hills.
Currently, railway connectivity in Garo Hills extends till Mendipathar in North Garo Hills and there are no proposals at the moment to extend tracks to other parts of the region.
According to Sangma, development should not be compromised at any cost though different issues can always be sorted out and addressed.
It may be mentioned that most of the NGOs in the State are apprehensive that railways will lead to large-scale influx into the State.
Though there is no specific railway proposal at the moment for Garo Hills, it is learnt that the Centre is keen to develop a railway line connecting Dhubri, Phulbari and Garobadha areas in West Garo Hills.
